‘WPI Uncovered’: Design thinking as a strategy for innovation

Within the START AT BEST program SYNERGIA Consulting’s project proposal “Design thinking as a strategy for innovation in the workplace” was approved for funding.

START AT BEST was intended for small and medium enterprises with the aim of promoting innovation initiatives in the workplace and examples of best practice while actively encouraging wider engagement and participation in the innovation process in the workplace at the level of the entire company or individual organizational unit.

The previous experience of Synergia Consulting identified the need for incentives that will affect the creation and positive attitude towards innovation and digitalization of business. Design Thinking is a method for developing innovations and activating creative potential. The process consists of five key stages and always ends with the presentation of a solution in the form of a prototype. During the process, a large number of ideas accumulate and the highlight is the definition of a key idea, one that best suits the needs of users.

The goals of the project “Design thinking as a strategy for innovation in the workplace” are to improve innovation activity for employees by educating them about design thinking, models and methodology. Through systematic support to employees by raising the level of innovation culture and promoting the design thinking model, we plan to encourage the growth and development of innovation processes in the workplace.

The four main activities of the project include:

  1. education of employees to get acquainted with the model of design thinking
  2. training of the company’s management for the application of design thinking models
  3. introduction of a design model of thinking within the company
  4. creating physical space to work on innovations

Through these activities, we want to develop a strategy for innovation in the workplace that will result in happier and more productive employees, improved service levels and business processes of the company, and thus a more efficient business model for the company and its customers.

Past experience has identified the need for incentive measures that will influence the creation of a positive attitude towards innovation and digitalization of businesses. For the purpose of employees growth and development, innovation activities need to be provided with adequate support. Either in the form of specialized education or continued provision of training management of the company to support the work environment. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the management that supports employees and enables continuous improvement. In other words, the objectives of this project are to enhance workplace innovation activities for employees by educating them about design thinking models and methodology. We plan to encourage the growth and development of workplace innovation processes through systematic support to employees. Above all, we will raise the level of an innovation culture and promote a design thinking model. This strategy will be implemented with four main types of activities which will result in  happier and more productive employees, improved services and business processes of the company.

  1. Deciding to start small and tackle a single condition, the team gathered to create a new model for managing asthma. First, the core innovation team shared learning from the discovery process. Then each attendee was invited to join a small group at one of five tables, where the participants shared individual ideas, grouped them into common themes, and envisioned what an ideal experience would look like for the young patients and their families.
